Mantrailing Guide
Everything you need to know before your first Mantrailing session with Sniff Happy.
What to Bring
You don’t need lots of specialist equipment to get started with Mantrailing. Here’s what you’ll need to bring to help your dog feel comfortable and enjoy their session.
• A comfortable, well-fitting harness suitable for Mantrailing. If you’re unsure what type is appropriate, please contact me before purchasing anything.
• A long line, if you already have one. Please check with me about suitable lengths and types before buying a new one.
• Plenty of high-value rewards. Bring tasty treats or a favourite toy that your dog finds particularly motivating.
• Fresh water and a bowl for your dog, plus water for yourself.
• Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Mantrailing takes place outdoors, so please dress for the conditions.
• Everything your dog needs to rest comfortably and safely in your vehicle between trails.

How to Prepare
A little preparation can help you and your dog feel comfortable and ready to enjoy your first Mantrailing session.
• Stick to your dog’s usual routine. There’s no need to tire them out beforehand. Avoid arriving with a dog who’s already exhausted or overwhelmed.
• Feed your dog as normal. There’s no need to skip meals to increase motivation. Avoid a large meal immediately before strenuous activity.
• Give your dog an opportunity to toilet before the session begins.
• Bring plenty of rewards your dog loves. Mantrailing is rewarding work, so have some particularly tasty treats or a favourite toy ready.
• Let me know about any concerns beforehand. If your dog is nervous, reactive or has particular needs, please get in touch so we can discuss how best to support them.
There’s no need for your dog to have any previous Mantrailing experience. We’ll introduce the activity at a level that suits their confidence and abilities.
How Our Mantrailing Sessions Work
Mantrailing is a wonderful opportunity for dogs to use their natural scenting abilities, build confidence and enjoy working alongside their owners.
Although sessions take place in small groups, each dog works individually, following their own trail at their own pace.
While one dog is working, the other dogs rest securely in their owners’ vehicles. This helps minimise distractions and allows each dog to concentrate without pressure to interact with other dogs.
Please ensure your dog can rest comfortably and safely in your vehicle between turns. Weather conditions and vehicle temperatures will always be considered, and sessions may be adapted or postponed if conditions are unsuitable.
What if my dog is reactive?
Reactive dogs are welcome to be considered for Mantrailing! However, every dog is different, and their individual needs and comfort are always my priority.
If your dog is highly reactive towards people, dogs or other environmental triggers, please contact me before booking so we can discuss their needs.
For some dogs, starting with individual 1:1 Mantrailing sessions may be more appropriate. This allows us to introduce the activity in a carefully managed environment, build confidence and assess whether progressing to group sessions would be suitable.
There is no expectation for dogs to interact with one another, and all dogs remain on lead outside their vehicles unless instructed otherwise.
The aim is for every dog and owner to feel comfortable, supported and able to enjoy the experience.
